چکیده

Forty-six percent of U.S. imports occur between related parties. This aggregate statistic, however, obscures considerable variation in intrarm intensity across import partners as well as products. Indeed, while 74 percent of U.S. imports from Japan are intrarm, the gure for Bangladesh is just 2 percent. Likewise, trade between related parties accounted for 2 percent of U.S. imports of rubber and plastic footwear, but more than 70 percent of U.S. imports of autos, medical equipment and instruments. There is also signi cant variation in intrarm intensity across countries within products. Photo Films, Plates and Chemicals (NAICS 325992), for example, ranks fth overall in terms of the share of intrarm trade, but half of the countries from which it is sourced (by volume) exported it to the United States almost completely at arm's length.1

Using confidential firm level data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) on activities of U.S. multinational corporations (MNCs) and their Canadian affiliates, we study the dramatic growth of intra-firm and arms-length U.S.-Canada trade over the 1984-1995 period. We find that the increase in trade occurred almost entirely on the intensive rather than the extensive margin. That is, MNC pare...

Accounting for the Growth of MNC-based Trade using a Structural Model of U

U.S. foreign trade has grown much more rapidly than GDP in recent decades. But there is no consensus as to why. More than half of U.S. foreign merchandise trade consists of armslength and intra-firm trade by multinational corporations (MNCs). But prior empirical work on the growth of trade has not focused on the role of MNCs. To better understand the growth of trade, it is important to understa...
